[edit] Suspects

Dick Coonan aka "Rathborn" - Drug Smuggler, Professional Assassin.

  • Murder Victims: Jack Coonan, Johanna Beckett, Diane Cavanaugh, Jennifer Stewart, and Scott Murray
  • Evidence: Unique MO, common knife shards left in victims, testimony of Johnny Vong, reference to "her" killer during questioning which betrayed more knowledge of Johanna Beckett's murder than he would otherwise have
  • Background & Notes: Military veteran of Gulf War I. Charity work to build schools in Afghanistan was just a front for a drug smuggling operation, in which heroin was packaged with Johnny Vong's DVDs in Hong Kong before being imported into the United States. Upon being identified by Beckett as the contract killer known as "Rathborn", Coonan took Castle as a hostage in the precinct in an attempt to escape. When Castle fought back, Beckett killed Coonan before he could shoot Castle. Coonan never revealed who hired him to kill Johanna Beckett or her colleagues, saying that they would "never touch him".

John Raglan - Retired Detective, NYPD

  • Murder Victims: None directly, but he helped cover-up the shooting of Bob Armen and in doing indirectly caused the death of Johanna Beckett and all the other victims tied to her case.
  • Evidence: Confession of hiding "sins behind his badge", incident reports showing his presence at Armen's shooting, statements from Pulgatti, McCallister, and Montgomery
  • Background & Notes: Graduated from the police academy with partner Gary McCallister. Montgomery joined as a third partner shortly before 1992 and they helped train him. He had a gambling habit that led to his taking money from Vulcan Simmons in exchange for acting as his drug courier and possibly covering-up his murders. Participated in kidnappings and blackmail of New York mobsters in an effort to deter crime while circumventing a legal system they felt was broken at the time. When the attempted kidnapping of Pulgatti resulted in the death of Armen in 1992, Raglan and McCallister orchestrated a cover-up, pinning the death on Pulgatti instead. Later they were found out by the Assistant D.A. and instead of being arrested, the Assistant D.A. blackmailed them. After Johanna Beckett and her colleagues were murdered 7 years later because they were putting together an appeal for Pulgatti, Raglan was instructed by the blackmailer to write off their murders as random gang violence so none of them would be discovered. When told he was dying in 2011, Raglan's conscience led him to contact Beckett in order to come clean on his role in the conspiracy. Before he could divulge the most crucial information however, he was murdered while meeting with Castle and Beckett.

Gary McCallister - Retired NYPD.

  • Murder Victims: None directly, but he helped cover-up the shooting of Bob Armen and in doing indirectly caused the death of Johanna Beckett and all the other victims tied to her case.
  • Evidence: Incident reports showing McCallister's presence at Armen's shooting, confessed to kidnapping ("incarcerating") mobsters and holding them until ransom ("bail") was paid for their release.
  • Background & Notes: Graduated from the police academy with partner John Raglan. Montgomery joined as a third partner shortly before 1992 and they helped train him. Participated in kidnappings and blackmail of New York mobsters in an effort to deter crime while circumventing a legal system they felt was broken at the time - felt that it wasn't "pretty" or "legal" but that it was "right" because at least they tried to "do something". After Johanna Beckett and her colleagues were murdered 7 years later because they were putting together an appeal for Pulgatti, McCallister presumably was instructed (along side Raglan) by the blackmailer to write off their murders as random gang violence so none of them would be discovered. Following Raglan's murder in 2011, he initially continued the cover-up, suggesting Beckett investigate Vulcan Simmons, but later confessed to his role in the conspiracy when faced with further evidence against him. He did not reveal the name of the blackmailer, but told them that they had woken the "dragon" and that the conspiracy was "so much bigger" than they realized. He was later convicted for his part in the conspiracy and sent to prison where he was murdered later the same year.

Roy Montgomery - Captain of the 12th NYPD Precinct

  • Victims: Bob Armen (accident/self-defense), and due to the ensuing cover-up he also indirectly caused the death of Johanna Beckett and all the other victims tied to her case.
  • Evidence: Altered incident reports, photo of Montgomery with partners Raglan and McCallister, instructions to Ryan and Esposito to "take out" Lockwood, confession in the hangar to Beckett and Castle
  • Background & Notes: Became a rookie cop trained by and partnered with Raglan and McCallister shortly before 1992. Participated in kidnappings and blackmail of New York mobsters in an effort to deter crime while circumventing a legal system they felt was broken at the time, because Raglan and McCallister were "heroes" to him. When the attempted kidnapping of Pulgatti resulted in the death of Armen in 1992, Montgomery assisted Raglan and McCallister in orchestrating a cover-up, pinning the death on Pulgatti instead. Later they were found out by the Assistant D.A. and instead of being arrested, the Assistant D.A. blackmailed them. After Johanna Beckett and her colleagues were murdered 7 years later because they were putting together an appeal for Pulgatti, Montgomery presumably was instructed (along side Raglan and McCallister) by the Dragon to write off their murders as random gang violence so none of them would be discovered. Fed up with his own corruption, Montgomery resolved to "put it all into the job" to become "the best cop" he could be. Looking for a chance to atone for his past mistakes, he took Kate Beckett under his wing, training her to become a homicide detective and initially supporting her efforts to pursue her mother's case while being careful at the same time not to admit his own role in her death. At some point he was confronted by the Dragon via Lockwood, brokering a deal that they would not harm Beckett if Montgomery kept her from pursuing the case further. He agreed but ultimately realized he could not force her to stand down. After Lockwood threatened to kill Montgomery's family if he didn't facilitate Beckett's murder, Montgomery sent a set of incriminating files to his friend Mr. Smith, empowering him to use the information to protect Beckett after he was dead. Montgomery then used Beckett to lure Lockwood into a final gun battle between himself and Lockwood, both of whom died as a result.

Hal Lockwood - Professional Assassin

  • Murder Victims: John Raglan, Jolene Granger, Gary McCallister, Officer Ryker, Roy Montgomery
  • Evidence: Fingerprint, security video, anti-anxiety medications, surveillance photos of Beckett, cell phone records, caught in the act of murdering McCallister
  • Background & Notes: His real name is not known; records for the name Hal Lockwood only went back two years. He has military connections and sniper training, using anti-anxiety medications provided via Chad Roderick and Jolene Granger to slow his heart beat so that he could aim more carefully. At some point Lockwood was apparently hired by the Dragon to watch the development of the case; in doing so he brokered a deal between Montgomery and the Dragon to protect Beckett if Montgomery kept Beckett from pursuing the investigation. When it was discovered that Raglan was going to tell Beckett everything about the case, Lockwood killed him before he had the chance to divulge the most crucial information. As the investigation into McCallister's murder unfolded, Ryan and Esposito were kidnapped by Lockwood and his accomplices. He stated that they were "impressed" by them because no one had ever come so close to finding Lockwood before and proceeded to torture them to try and find out how much they knew. After Beckett and Castle intervened and captured Lockwood, he was sent to prison where Beckett would visit weekly to question him about the Dragon. Never divulging this information, he continued to covertly communicate with the Dragon, arranging for his transfer to the general prison population, murdered McCallister once there, and then used his arraignment for that murder as an opportunity to escape, flying a helicopter to a New Jersey hangar. After murdering Officer Ryker, the prison guard who had been bribed to move him into the general prison population, his target became Beckett. Lockwood attempted to blackmail Montgomery into facilitating her murder. Montgomery baited Lockwood by bringing Beckett to the hangar as instructed, but arranged for Castle to remove her from the scene before a final shootout between himself and Lockwood could occur. Lockwood shoots Montgomery fatally, but before Montgomery dies he is able to kill Lockwood.

Cole Maddox - Professional Assasain

  • Murder Victims: Orlando Costas
  • Evidence: DNA at crime scenes of both Costas and Kate Beckett's earlier shooting, surveillance video showing him meeting with Costas, confessed to torturing Mr. Smith to locate the incriminating files tied to the Johanna Beckett murder case, attempted to retrieve the incriminating files in order to facilitate Beckett & Castle's murder
  • Background & Notes: His real name is Cedric Marks, and he a military veteran who became a special operations contractor for Aransas Solutions. He is hired by the Dragon first to kill Kate Beckett at Capt. Montgomery's funeral. Disguised as a groundskeeper, he uses Martin Holst's missing sniper weapon to shoot Beckett in the heart, almost killing her. Maddox escapes and Beckett survives. However, Maddox cannot subsequently resume his mission because the incriminating files Montgomery sent are being used to blackmail the Dragon and protect Beckett. Maddox is therefore assigned to identify the person who is protecting Beckett and to steal the incriminating files so that Beckett can be killed without risk to the Dragon. Maddox arranges for Orlando Costas to break into Capt. Montgomery's residence to steal any information that could help identify this person; these records included his wedding photo album. Maddox then kills Costas after the job is completed and he has Montgomery's records. He identifies Mr. Smith just prior to Beckett and Esposito intervening, but avoids capture and confronts Mr. Smith in his home later that evening. Torturing him through the night, Maddox succeeded in burning one file but had problems finding the second copy. Beckett and Castle find Mr. Smith alive and Maddox tails them to see if they could provide additional clues. After eavesdropping to find out where Mr. Smith's office is, he ties them up and locks them in a bathroom, threatening to kill them once he destroys the last file. Maddox then cracks the safe in Mr. Smith's office, but the safe is rigged and when he picks up the file a small bomb explodes. Maddox is killed and the second copy of the file is largely destroyed, but enough of the pieces are still intact for Beckett, Castle, Esposito, and Ryan to piece together important clues about the case.

Sen. William H. Bracken aka "The Dragon" aka "Lazarus"

  • Murder Victims: Johanna Beckett, Dianne Cavanaugh, Scott Murray, Jennifer Stewart, John Raglan, Jolene Granger, Gary McCallister, Officer Riker, Roy Montgomery, Orlando Costas, 6 unnamed mid/upper-level drug dealers, 1 unnamed police officer (all victims murdered indirectly through hired hitmen)
  • Evidence: Money order/Bank account number, statements made by Mr. Smith
  • Background & Notes: Bracken claims to have entered into the legal/political field because his neighborhood friends were killed as teenagers by their mother, who was facing severe financial hardship. He wanted to help the "little guy" at all costs, and subscribes to the philosophy that you should "never expect the truth from a politician". He began his career by serving the Assistant District Attorney in the geographic area covering the 12th precinct from 1988-1992. Upon finding out about illegal kidnapping and ransom activities conducted by Officers Raglan, McCalliser, and Montgomery, Bracken blackmails them. He channels the blackmail money into his first Congressional campaign. As his political star rose, the potential loss if his blackmail schemes coming to light increased as well. When he discovered that an appeal was being put together for Pulgatti which threatened to expose the kidnapping/ransom activities as well as his blackmailing of Raglan, McCalliser, and Montgomery, he commissioned Dick Coonan to murder of all those involved with the appeal, including Johanna Beckett. He then instructed Raglan, McCalliser, and Montgomery to cover-up the murders of those involved in the appeal to avoid having their own roles in the conspiracy be exposed. A decade later, when Bracken subsequently found out that Johanna's daughter Kate, a homicide detective, had made headway in her mother's murder case and that Raglan was about to confess to his role in the conspiracy, he paid Hal Lockwood to kill Raglan before he could talk. At some point, he brokered a deal with Montgomery to refrain from harming Beckett directly if he would keep her off the case, but when he failed to do so he ordered Lockwood to target Beckett as well as others involved with the case. After Lockwood is killed in the process, he hires Cole Maddox to complete the job. After Beckett narrowly survives being shot by Maddox, Bracken receives a phone call in which Montgomery's friend uses information that incriminates Bracken to resume Beckett's protection in exchange for Castle keeping Beckett off the case. Bracken then shifts tactics, first trying to undermine the agreement by getting Castle removed from the precinct through the elimination of his political ally, Mayor Wheldon; then after this fails, he orders Maddox to find the person blackmailing him and get the files back so Beckett can be killed. Unbeknownst to Bracken, Maddox succeeds in destroying the files but Beckett learns enough from them anyway to bluff Bracken into thinking she has another copy of the file. She reestablishes the blackmail agreement for her and her loved one's continued protection. Later, Bracken is the subject of an assassination attempt which he traces back to his former political donor and powerful "kingmaker", Bill Moss, who he believes tried to have him killed because he stopped taking "orders" from him. Beckett later learns as part of a botched undercover narcotics investigation that Bracken appears be building a massive political warchest via a drug and money laundering ring, which is funneling money into SuperPACs such as "Future Forward". Almost murdered while undercover, Beckett is saved at the last minute by Elena Markov, who told her that "Lazarus" sent her because he "owed" Beckett and wanted her to live - Beckett concludes this is Bracken's payback for her saving him from the assassination attempt the previous year. Bracken announced shortly thereafter that he was forming an exploratory committee for a run at the U.S. Presidency, with news reports indicating that he is an "early frontrunner" and well-funded.

Vulcan Simmons - drug trafficker and money laundering ring leader

  • Murder Victims: 6 unnamed mid/upper-level drug dealers, 1 unnamed police officer (all victims murdered indirectly through contract killer Elena Markov)
  • Evidence: Beckett's observations while undercover, attempted murder of Beckett
  • Background & Notes: Simmons is known as a ruthless, intelligent criminal who used to run the drug trade and other illegal activities in Washington Heights, where Johanna Beckett was murdered. Simmons has not been convicted of any crimes in recent years. When linked to John Ragland and questioned about Johanna Beckett's murder, he taunted Beckett but was released due lack of evidence. Several years later, Beckett encountered him while part of a botched undercover narcotics investigation, where he was presented to her initially as "Lazarus", leader of a drug and money laundering ring that funneled significant money into a SuperPAC called Future Forward. After torturing and interrogating Beckett for information about her undercover mission, he ordered her execution but was later overruled by the real "Lazarus". Simmons moved his operations and secured an alibi in time to avoid prosecution for his actions.

Elena Markov - Professional Assassin

  • Murder Victims: 6 unnamed mid/upper-level drug dealers, 1 unnamed police officer
  • Evidence: Consistent MO of left-handed slitting of throats, Beckett's observations while undercover
  • Background & Notes: Described as a "skilled" assassin by Vulcan Simmons, Markov was born in Russia before coming to the United States. She is similar to Beckett in build and appearance, and speaks both English and Russian fluently. When taken into custody for questioning about her role in Simmon's drug operation, she lied to conceal her true identity as their contract killer, claiming instead to be a low-level drug courier. Escaping police custody via a fake suicide attempt, she later saved Beckett's life at the behest of "Lazarus".

[edit] Persons of Interest

Medical Examiner

  • When the four murders occurred in 1999, the Medical Examiner either did not make a connection between the murders or else was part of the conspiracy
  • The MO from the four 1999 murders was distinctive enough that when Castle asked Dr. Clark Murray (a forensic pathologist) to review Johanna's Medical Examiner report, he and Lanie were able to link it to the other three 1999 murders (A Death in the Family, Deep in Death) as well as the murder of Jack Coonan (Sucker Punch). Describing Jack Coonan's injuries, Dr. Murray explained:
    • There was rectangular bruising around most of the wounds caused by the hilt of the knife striking with force enough to compress the skin. Therefore the injuries penetrate deeper than the actual length of the blade. The blade is honed so fine it is brittle enough for bits to break when it strikes bone. Slivers were found in both victims and we now know those slivers come from the same murder weapon. We know for sure that he has killed five people this way. Not a serial murderer but a professional. Someone with extensive military training. I recreated a model of the knife blade; it's a "Special Operations Group" knife, favored by special forces during Gulf War I. He kills with a single blow, using the other wounds to camouflage the skill with which the initial stroke was delivered. The same method and weapon that killed was used 10 years ago (1999)."

Joe Pulgatti - Mob enforcer, currently serving time in prison.

  • though innocent, he confessed to the murder of Bob Armen in order the death penalty (he KNEW he would be convicted since he was being framed by dirty cops).
  • he was the eye witness to the murder of Bob Armen.
  • he says that he was a target of the "kidnapping" ring. Three masked / hooded men tried to kidnap him.
  • Bob Armen came out and attempted to help him, tried to take one of the masked men's guns, and he was shot and killed.
  • John Raglan was the arresting officer.
  • Johanna Beckett (and a group of her colleagues) were working with Joe on an appeal to get his conviction overturned in this murder. She was the only attorney willing to take a look at his case because all she cared about was the truth.

Bob Armen

  • Died in same alley as Johanna Beckett, but seven years earlier
  • Worked as an undercover federal agent in the mob
  • Was accidentally shot dead by Montgomery when he reached for Montgomery's gun during the Pulgatti kidnapping back when Montgomery was a rookie.
  • Montgomery stated that Armen "wasn't supposed to be there" on the day of his death.

Mike Yanavich

  • Formerly in charge of records room, current manager of a cop bar
  • Apparently could afford to purchase the cop bar free and clear because he was shot on the job and got disability payments
  • Records were altered to facilitate the cover-up of Montgomery's role in the conspiracy during Yanavich's tenure in charge of the records room
  • Graduated with the same Academy class as Raglan and McCallister

Rod Halstead

  • Wrote report about the warehouse that burnt down that may contain crutial report as accident caused by power surge in a junction box
  • His picture appear in the package of files sent by Montgomery to Mr. Smith together with some reports from the NYFD.
  • Had multiple citations for valor and commendations by the mayor

Mr. Smith

  • Receiver of package sent by Montgomery containing incriminating files about Bracken's activities, along with instructions to use the files to protect Beckett
  • As a young man, was at Montgomery's wedding.
  • Made a call to Castle, telling him that Beckett is safe as long as she doesn't keep digging.
  • Made an appearance at the hospital dressed as a doctor when Castle was visiting Beckett - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fBJQ-qi19U :06 seconds. He smiled when he saw Castle fixing his hair before going in to see her.
  • Helped Castle solve the Mayor's case, after the Mayor's gubernatorial ambitions were ruined, but before the scandal endangered his position as Mayor. He claimed that the forces opposed to Beckett were willing to leave the Mayor be, purely to keep Castle working with Beckett, so that Castle could keep Beckett off the case.
  • Approached by Cole Maddox, claiming that the "arrangement" was nothing more than blackmail. Maddox demanded that he turn over all evidence. Suggests that the Dragon was being blackmailed anonymously.

Jordan Norris

  • Former Chief of Staff to Mayor Wheldon
  • Suspected of feeding an account number to the Dragon in order to frame Mayor Wheldon for embezzlement
  • Suspected of involvement/complicity in the death of Laura Cambridge, who he spoke with the night she was killed and who he may have confided the plot to out of guilt while believing he could not be identified.

6' tall white man with dark hair

  • A 6' tall white man with dark hair was described to be seen at the victim's home in Dial M for Murder
  • A 6' tall white man with dark hair was described as the man from the gas company who possibly stole the hard drive with incriminating evidence in DAG in Dial M for Mayor

Bill Moss

  • Lawyer who appeared just in time to prevent Norris from divulging the identity of the person/people behind the murder of Laura Cambridge and likely Johanna Beckett's murder case as well (Dial M for Murder).
  • Generally fits the description of the 6' tall white man with dark hair

Ben Moss

  • Operated a Political Action Committee (PAC) and was a "former presidential..."
  • Known as a powerful political "kingmaker" who supported Sen. Bracken in the past, until Sen. Bracken stopped taking "orders" from him.
  • Taken into custody by federal agents in connection to payments made to Sen. Bracken's former driver, who attempted to assassinate him (Recoil)

Evan Potter

  • Helped establish the SuperPAC "Future Forward" but had no knowledge of its day-to-day operations or accounting.
  • Targeted for execution by Simmons and/or Sen. Bracken, but saved by Beckett

Jason Kochler

  • Day-to-day manager of the SuperPAC "Future Forward"
  • Died from an apparent heart attack the day after Evan Potter survived the attempt on his life.

[edit] Suspects No Longer Under Investigation

  • Chad Rodrick - drug trafficker with connections to Lockwood but not to Johanna Beckett's murder
  • Vincent Delgado - drug trafficker and gang member with connections to Orlando Costas but not to Johanna Beckett's murder
